TIRRELL RESIDENCE

PLOT: 5 ACRES
LOCATION: FRANCONIA, NH
CONTRACTOR: FREGEAU BUILDERS
EXPECTED COMPLETION - FALL 2026
The design of this custom home was inspired, at the client’s request, by a local residence designed in the 1970s by a protégé of Frank Lloyd Wright. The home combines elements of Mid-Century Modern architecture, including its relatively low-sloped hip roof, with characteristics of rustic mountain design.
The site is located just three miles north of Franconia Notch. Of utmost importance to the client was maintaining both an orientation toward and unobstructed sightlines to Mt. Lafayette and “The Ridge” from every room. This was achieved by building up the site topography and incorporating a classic mountain-modern gable-end picture window. Mt. Lafayette is visible from every south-facing window.
The interior centers on a spacious Great Room that integrates the kitchen, dining, and living areas, anchored by a substantial rustic stone fireplace. The complex hip roof structure is supported by exposed timber framing, while the ceiling is clad in stained plywood, reinforcing the home’s warm and natural character.
