The design for this custom home was inspired, per client’s request, by a local home designed in the 1970’s by a protege of Frank Lloyd Wright. It combines elements of mid-century modern, such as the relatively low sloped hip roof, and elements of rustic mountain style. The site is located just 3 miles north of Franconia Notch. Of utmost importance to the client was an orientation toward and direct site line from all rooms to Mt. Lafayette and “The Ridge.” This was achieved by building up the site topography and introducing a classic mountain modern, gable-end wall picture window. Lafayette is visible from every south-facing window. The interior features a “Great Room” with open kitchen, dining, and living room, and substantial rustic stone fireplace. The complex hip roof is supported by exposed timbers and the ceiling is clad with stained plywood.
